RBD Block Challenge 2025 - Week 12: Crossroads
This week’s block, Crossroads, designed by Amber Johnson of Gigi’s Thimble, brings bold intersections and dynamic movement to our quilts. With its clean lines and layered details, it’s a block that feels both classic and modern—a perfect place to explore color and contrast.
Reflections: Finding Direction
Piecing together Crossroads felt like charting a path through a creative journey. The balance between sharp angles and soft edges reminded me of the twists and turns in life that lead us to new and exciting places.
For my version, I selected fabrics from my It Takes a Village collection. By pairing earthy greens with vibrant corals and cool blues, I created a palette that reflected growth and possibility. The intersecting lines felt like connections coming together, creating a sense of harmony in the design.
A Closer Look at Crossroads
Crossroads is a 10" x 10" finished block that uses triangles, rectangles, and a central square to create a design full of movement and symmetry. Amber’s thoughtful construction invites quilters to experiment with fabric combinations and create a unique story with each piece.
My Take on the Block
Here’s how I brought Crossroads to life:
- Fabric Choices: I used prints from It Takes a Village to combine warm tones and cool accents, letting the contrast emphasize the block’s intersecting paths.
- Focus on Balance: Alternating vibrant and neutral tones created a sense of depth and direction.
- Tips for Precision:
- Trim triangles carefully to ensure crisp intersections at the block’s center.
- Lay out all pieces before sewing to double-check orientation and color placement.
- Press seams open where multiple points meet for a flatter finish.
